Beernerd.app Release Party - Week 6
The launch party π was an absolute success! The event was full of fun, great feedback, and we even had a SEV0. What a week! π΅βπ«
Launch Party Overview π₯³
Timeline ποΈ
- We got to the park at around 1:50pm and were finally set up by 2:30pm.
- The party start was for 2:00pm... yeah I should really work on my punctualityπ
.
- People rolled in from 2:45pm - 3:00pm and the tournament went underway by 3:30pm.
- Before the start we ran a practice game and I uncovered a
SEV0 bug.
- A user was unable to record a miss due to a CSS issue.
- This could have easily been prevented had I ran a quick QA beforehand.
- Luckily I brought my laptop and was able to merge a quick fix (see photo below).
- Note to self: don't ship code the day of the tournamentπ€¦ββοΈ.
- We had 9 teams total in the tournament - including 1 team of people we didn't even know!
- Spoiler Alert! This team went on to win the whole thing.
- One team had left early, so the the forfeit feature shipped earlier in the week came in clutch.
Feedback π£
- Statting orientation - statters were annoyed they couldn't re-lay the table to make statting easier.
- Global notifications - annoying for tournament owner to approve notifications while in the middle of statting. Need to make notifications global.
- Game Comments - error occurred when adding a comment to the game because the app tried to access user information that wasn't available in state.
- Refetch game information upon notification approval - once notification is approved user had to refresh the page to get updated owner information.

Release Notes π
Monday, November 17th
- Built and shipped π’ Beernerd's notification platform - allowing users to request statting privileges.
- Thanks to my friend Andrew Che (Founder of Cypress AI), we shipped 2 items:
- The ability to view follower and following information.
- The hilarious /404 page.
Tuesday, November 18th
- Gave Sacco a walkthrough of how to publish blogs.
- Built a CAD model of the table for better engineering understanding (also just needed a little break from the code).
Wednesday, November 19th
- Published week 5 blog post.
- Built out a ticket for my roommate Milki to work on. I got him a Beernerd hoodie from our store and as payment he promised to work on the app.
- Shipped the ability to leave comments on games. From
/record/beerdie/[gameId], clicking the notes icon pulls up a menu where a user can leave a comment. Each comment is stored in a table with gameId, senderId, and timestamp information. This functionaliy will later be leveraged for the app's feed.
Thursday, November 20th (Table Build π¨)
- Construction of 2 Beerdie tables π₯΅.
Friday, November 21st (Table Paint π¨)
- Table paint and stenciling.
- Recorded and posted an ad for the tournament on our socials π
(instagram reel).
Saturday, November 22nd (Day of Party π)
- I woke up and chose violence... I shipped 3 PRs right before the tournament:
- Added comment viewing from
/stat/overview page.
- Added forfeit functionality (seriously this saved the tournament).
- Added teams drop down from
/stat/overview info tab. This makes it easier to map who is on what team from the bracket view (still not the best design).
- After the tournament I got dinner and drinks with friends to celebrate. The perfect ending to a great day!
Sunday, November 23rd
- Tournament cleanup and reflection.
Overall, an awesome week of work! These are the weeks that make all the hard work worth it. Really excited for future events, stay tuned!
